The foundation of today’s Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) was laid in 1908, when the Valve and Fittings Institute formed a special committee—CMSPFV—to unify industry standards. Although the Institute disbanded in 1910, the committee’s work endured, leading to MSS’s official formation in 1924. With 38 founding manufacturers and a New York City headquarters, MSS released its first Standard Practice, SP-1-1929, focused on pipe plugs.
